June 30th at 7pm will be a Special Newell City Council meeting to address budget issues.
One of Newell Horizons goals was recently completed. In keeping with town colors a maroon and white park shelter has been constructed in the north park. A formal dedication ceremony will be held at the shelter on July 12 at 10am, the public is welcome to attend. A program is planned.
Saturday, July 12th has been set as the Newell Clean up day, the rubble site will be free of charge for most items. It is strongly advised that folks check with the city for items that are accepted before driving out. Tires will be accepted for a fee.
Butte County has been awarded with a grant to help provide education, support and awareness of the health risks associated with tobacco useage. Give your input and help brainstorm ideas to spend the funds and maybe volunteer a little time to the cause. Free lunch/breakfast will be served at TJ’s on July 9th at 10am for those who attend.
Kick of the new grant period with the community!
Attend the Celebration on Friday, July 11 from 11:30-1pm. Free lunch for all at the school lunch room, as well as crafts and activities.

In 2005, 85,000 persons over the age of 65 were victims of non-fatal violent crime. Crime victims over the age of 65 lost a total of $1.3 billion due to personal and property crimes in 2005. Many of these crimes were committed by family members or people who were known by the victim. What can we do to help keep our elder population and ourselves safe?

Thanks to the hard work of a few Horizons members, Mrs. Melanie Williamson’s exploratory class and Mr. Wince’s gym class, part of the Horizons Stratgic Plan was accomplished Friday morning. Three new trees were planted next to the gym addition and one tree was replaced in front of the high school. Three of the trees were sponsored by donors and one was bought by the Horizons group. Thanks so much all who made this happen!

It’s that time of month again! Please join us Saturday, April 19th for our monthly Horizons meeting at 10:00 a.m. at TJ’s cafe. Let’s finish this grant out strong, only a couple of months left!
Part of our strategic plan was to work together with other community groups to plan the Newell centennial. The first meeting of the Newell Centennial Committee is going to be held on Thursday, April 10th at 7:00 p.m. at TJ’s Cafe. Everyone is welcome to come and help plan this special occasion.
And with it the construction continues on the picnic shelter. Boom Concrete is preparing for the pour of concrete. Cold weather is always more work with pouring a slab and presents more opportunities for the unexpected. Now, with the warming of things, we see construction begin again. Stay tuned to see how it progresses.
About 8-10 people attended last week’s work meeting. We went through each goal of our strategic plan and looked at the progress of each goal. Some deadlines had to be pushed back, there were others that had already been met. After examining each goal we then discussed what needed to be done on each goal and how we could best get that goal back on the timeline originally set. We are excited about the progress that has already been done. The meeting also helped us to get excited and motivated about contining on to get all our goals accomplished.
Thanks to all who have worked so hard on the Horizons project. You are making a difference!
On April 17th from 1:30-4:00 the Newell Library is putting on an Open House with the theme of “The Wild West.” There will be a raffle along with prizes to win and refreshments with books, books, books!

The shelter has been delayed due mostly to winter weather. The supplies are purchased and the work crews are on board. We just need some good weather and time to get the volunteers together to finish. The concrete floor and walk path is the next step which will be done by Boom Concrete and then Bob Newth will organize the work to finish the shelter. We are a little later than originally planned, but then this winter hasn’t exactly been conducive to concrete or volunteer labor. Please bare with us as we work toward finishing this project this spring.

The 7th grade exploratory class has a goal of “go green“. They have decided they are wanting to recycle newspapers and aluminum cans to raise money to fix up the basketball and volleyball nets in the park next year. Bins to recycle newspapers are found at the high school library, the middle/elementary library and teacher’s lounge. There is also a cage next to the red fuel tank at the middle school parking lot as a receptacle for aluminum cans.
In the Austin Auditorium at 7:00 pm March 20th the Annual Battle of the Sexes will be taking place. This is a fundraiser for post prom so the cost to get in is $3 for adults and $2 for students. There will be a pie auction and a shoot out at half-time for $1 per try. Chance to win a Gatorade or PowerAde. Come and watch your Irrigator Basketball players and coaches compete!
The monthly meeting at TJs is going to be cancelled this month due to the Easter Festivites. Please plan to join us for the Easter Egg Hunt, a free taco feed, ham bingo, a bake walk, and lots of fun! fun! fun!
