Could Change in Presho lead to some spare change in Newell?

This blog post from Presho caught my eye - it’s very similar to what many of us do with our WRCTC bill (Round Up program). Anyone think this could be a viable option for Newell???

Presho Blog Post: The idea behind the “Change Presho” campaign is to ask folks to donate to a community project the change they receive from local businesses . For example, your bill at Husman’s could be $23.12. If you wrote your check for $24, it would be easier to balance your account and you could donate 88 cents to a community project. I think we would all be surprised how much money we could raise this way for really very little effort or expense on any one person. What could a community project be - maybe some possibilities would be trees in the boulevards, community signs, the community resource booklet, there are many ideas that could be pursued. What do others think of this idea?

By no means do I think I’ve gotten every business included, so lets work together and make this the most complete and accurate list of services available in our area.

Hey, if folks know they can get it local - they won’t go elsewhere!!! On the flip side, maybe if out of area folks know we have it, they’ll come here to get it!

As if our teachers don’t give enough, they’ve gone one step futher this year - this is the letter students brought home recently:

The annual Newell Elks Hoop Shoot was held in the MSGym on December 2nd. After shooting 25 shots, 13 Newell students between 8-13 yrs old qualified to move on to the District level held in Lead on December 8th.

Newell’s Lutheran Church put on a lunch, craft bazaar, bake sale, and even had entertainment provided by the Slim Butte Boys on the afternoon of December 1st. All proceeds will go towards crisis intervention in our community.

On Saturday, December 1st stop in at the NVN Center from 9am-2pm for a craft bazaar. From 11:30-12:30 the Slim Butte Boys will be providing the entertainment, and many different food items will be available.

If you haven’t purchased today’s edition of The Valley Irrigator you’re missing out (ok, I’ll admit my opinion might be slightly biased), as the Horizons/City Clean up made front page news. Appoximately 5 tons of buried rubble, 5 tons of scrap metal, 150 refrigerator items, 130 misc white goods, 2 cars and 1 ton of branches were hauled to the City Rubble Site on Novemeber 3rd - all this in ONE DAY! All in all they estimate 100 tons of scrap iron will be crushed, compacted and hauled on outta town when everything is said and done.

If the numbers alone don’t prove there’s been some serious structural changes in many areas (leadership, community, and povery), I’m not sure what will. Many attributed the days success to Horizons, City, and other residents ALL working together towards a common goal. Who says change is a bad thing?!!!

Are you a hunter that wants to help area families in need? Or is your family in need of meat? The SD Sportsmen Against Hunger (SAH) can help, this year they are issuing processing certificates worth $50 (limit of 4 per person) to hunters that donate all the meat from an antlerless deer for processing and distribution to needy families.

$50 will cover the entire cost of processing at Newell’s Tri-County Lockers. Hunters can fill out the processing certificate forms at the locker to use as payment. For more information on the program visit www.sdgfp.info/Wildlife/hunting/Info/SAH/Index.htm

After being processed, the locker donates the meat to the NVN Ministerial Association who runs the Newell Food Pantry. If you could use the meat, visit the pantry at the NVN Center which is open every 1st and 3rd Thursday from 1-4pm. If you cannot make it during those hours, contact Assembly of God Pastor Nathan Keller and he’ll make arrangements to open it up at a more convenient time.

Another shining example of how leadership from those in the community can help those in need, and also raise awareness of how we can work together to combat poverty in our area.

On the evening of November 18th the NVN Ministerial Association put on a Community Thanksgiving feast, followed by a  Steve Desmond concert. Hundreds of area residents attended, friends and families came together to worship and enjoy the company of their neighbors.

On the evening of November 17th at the NVN Center the Butte County Historical Society held a pancake supper and silent auction to raise funds for continued restoration of the 1884 Hillside School, which is now west of the BF Police Dept. Originally it was located SW of Nisland. President Gwenn Vallery said anyone with an interest in history is welcome to join, dues are 5$ a year - contact any of the more than 70 members for additional information.

On Wednesday, November 28th from 8:30-3:30 there will be a blood drive at the Newell High School sponsored by the National Honor Society. Total Donor Goal is 48, local contact is Betsey Burtzlaff at 456-2393. For additional info visit www.unitedbloodservices.org

Over the past couple of weeks Horizons has continued to get phone calls to help people move out old fridges, water heaters, stoves, and other miscellaneous scrap metal. There have been lots of loads to the rubble site since the main cleanup day held on Saturday, November 3rd. Thanks to the people who have continued to volunteer equipment, time and muscles!

Three local churches are participating in Operation Christmas Child this year. You can help - fill a shoebox with gift items for a girl or boy in one of the following age catagories 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Then along with $7 for shipping, drop the filled box off at the Newell Baptist Church on 11-11 from 4-6pm or 11-12 from 5-6pm. The Newell Christian Fellowship will be packaging boxes on 11-12 starting at 1pm, and the Prairie Home Church will be accepting boxes on 11-11 during church services. These boxes will be shipped to children in more than 100 countries that wouldn’t otherwise receive a gift for Christmas. During the Celebration Event on November 9th Horizons members presented the Newell Strategic Plan to the community. The five basic goals are to put up new signage, improve the attractiveness of town, creat a stronger more unified sense of community, promote local businesses while raising funds for community improvements, and to build an assisted living facility. Guest Speaker was Kari Fruechte our Horizons Project Director, many local Horizons members also spoke.

On the right hand side of the site under Blogroll are links to other Horizons Communities in SD. Click on a few and take a look at the fun events, new ideas, and great accomplishments other towns are promoting and completing. Remember part of earning our new technology (digital camera, printer, and hopefully a laptop) is connecting with other blog sites. So take a look at what they have to offer - they need your comments too, and we might learn a little something also!

Martin Trucking has arrived and begun crushing and compacting all the scrap iron, white appliances and other metal items that have been brought to the City Rubble Site. You still have until 11/9 to make an appointment with the City to bring in metal items, so get cleaning! Starting on November 1st Mary Koens, a Rural Advocate with the Artemis House will be available at the Newell Public Library from 1:30-3:30pm every Thursday. Koens has many educational pamphlets, resources and is there just to visit if needed.

Donations for the Artemis Boutique in Spearfish can be dropped off with Koens when she visits Newell. Donations of clothing, toys or necessities need to be in new or good condition, the store is used to provide those in need with necessary items and is also a thrift store that’s open to the public (344 Colorado Blvd - Spearfish) the proceeds from sales goes directly to support the Artemis House.

Newell Horizons organized another successful clean up day on November 3rd. Countless loads of junk were hauled to the City Rubble Site on volunteers trailers, pick up beds, and dump trucks. Truely a community effort was seen - the Mayor, local business owners, Pastors, residents, country folks, teachers… even teenagers and children pitched in to bring Newell that much closer to a sparkly clean future. Pulling together to get things done - that’s Newell community unity at work - job well done Horizons members!

Horizons is holding a CELEBRATION EVENT on November 9th!  Enjoy a FREE meal starting at 6pm. Guest speakers with the big envieling of the Newell Strategic plan to follow. This is your chance to see what projects and goals will be accomplished in the near future, get involved on 11/9!

Newell MS Exploratory Class has been given the title of JR Horizons by the local newspaper. The class is committed to making a difference every day. This particular day they spent their classtime cleaning up roofing materials at the house of a lady who was unable to do so herself. Giving back to the community is a great lesson our schools are instilling in our youth!

Nisland volunteers including City Council Members and the local CAT program put together a Halloween themed event like no other. The fairground pavilion was transformed into a foggy, cobwebbed delight that provided fun, prizes and screams throughout the evening. Upstairs featured a spookhouse, and a costume contest was held towards the end of the night. Many local businesses contributed, all funds raised went towards the fairground grandstand repair fund and food raised from the one can admission went to the CAT program who will distribute it to those in need throughout the NVN area.

Work done on clean up days have included mowing lawns, felling dead trees, scraping and painting, washing windows, and more. If you’ve got projects you need help with or would like to help yourself - contact Cheryl McCann and she’ll help line things up! November 3rd is the next Clean Up Day!!!

Horizons organized an area garage sale to help folks get a jump start on their fall cleaning, and maybe make a few bucks. For out of towners City Hall or the City Park was available for them to set up and sell their items. Horizons members put maps together so bargain hunters didn’t miss out on a single sale, and so foks unfamiliar with town knew where to go. A few local businesses participated by holding sidewalk sales that day.
