I’ve taken a few photos of things about town - these things can be clearly seen from a public street or public place - be the first to name what or where they are and be the Champion of Observation for the week! I’ll post the correct answers next week, maybe along with a new set a photos if this seems fun to everyone.

Here’s the last set of questions for February - I’ll answer one to get the ball rolling, I’m hoping someone else will answer them also. Either add to the post or click and enter under comments.
Category 7: Taking action on leadership How has your community leadership expanded? What changes have been made in who is now involved in leadership positions?
Are more people participating in leadership? From my view, many folks have been inspired enough by the ideas of Horizons to take part when they might normally not. I think in general, there’s a core group in town that participates in many orgs, so burnout of long time members and recruitment of new members for any group seems to be an ongoing struggle. Hopefully due to the leadership training new people will feel comfortable enough with their new skills to play more active roles in the community.
Are different kinds of people (representing more sectors or parts of the community) now participating in community leadership?
Does the community leadership reflect the community’s demographic profile?
Are more low income people participating in community leadership?
What changes have been made in the way your community recruits and trains new leaders? Sustains existing leaders?

The Newell 5th graders have been working on a graded project lately - they have each come up with a handmade product they will be selling during during the Science Fair on Tuesday the 26th in the MSGym. Each students has made expense reports, learned about advertising and worked hard on their product - come see what they’ve got to offer - and don’t forget to bring a few dollars!

More questions - I answered one, I’m hoping others will chime in too! We need your input and participation.
Category 3: Taking action on poverty
What kinds of concrete steps are being taken by your community to address poverty? I think one of the steps I’ve seen taken are the massive clean up efforts, helping those who either can’t physically or monetarily manage to get junk off their property has made a noticable change in the astetics in town. Cleaning up empty lots, then seeing other property owners follow suite and demolish old junk houses and in turn a nice new residence and family that either are building houses or move houses on to the cleaned up lot is nice to see. We’ve got a great little town, its nice to see folks unite to help out their neighbors.
How did your community make choices about the actions most likely to have an impact on poverty?
How are low income involved?
How does your plan for poverty reduction link with existing leaders, groups and organizations?
What other partnership will help your community carry out its poverty reduction plan?

To meet requirements that can earn us free technology the blog must answer a few questions each month. Comment below or post your own blog and answer a question! The more input the better!!! I answered one to get us started….
Category 10: Building skills and mobilizing around community
How has your community changed since joining Horizons? Is your community more hopeful about the future? How do you know?
What evidence do you have that community members see poverty as a community issue?
Are more people involved in creating ideas, plans and taking actions on behalf of the community? What difference does this make?
What new partnerships have been created (within your community, or between your community and others)? Horizons has partnered with the city during the last clean up day, and then with Community Club for the annual Santa Day. Those are just two examples of the efforts Horizons has made to partner with exsisting groups within the community of Newell.
