Whether you have a few extra dollars in your pocket or equipment and/or hands that are willing to pitch in and work, the Town of Nisland is looking for you. They are working hard to raise funds to match a grant that will help them to restore the Grandstand and other areas of the Butte/Lawrence Co. Fairgrounds. The Church Release program sponsored by Newell Christian Fellowship Church is slated to begin again at the end of the month. They welcome any child from K-5th grade to attend, the program is held once a week during school hours. For more information contact Sean or Jani Carney.
It’s that time again…Newell City Council will meet at Newell City Hall on Wednesday, January 9th at 7pm for their regular scheduled meeting.
Nisland Town Board will also meet on Wednesday, January 9th at the Nisland Town Hall at 7:30pm for their regular meeting.

On Wednesday January 9th K&J Ag Industries in Vale will be hosting their 4th annual Ag event. Over 20 ag based vendors will be present, along with product demonstrations and lunch will be served. The event is being held at the Vale Gym from 10am-2pm.
SD Public Broadcasting is interested in coming to Newell to put on a free presentation to the public regarding the upcoming switch from analog to digital tv signals. If any group or organization would like to host this event they can contact Glynda at the Newell Public Library (456-2179) for additional information.
On December 2-3rd the team competed in Pierre for the 2007 SD State FFA Fall CDE Events. The Ag Issues team took 2nd, Ag Communications and Marketing Plan Team placed 8th.
In individual events Joe Reedy took 5th in Extemporaneous Speaking, and Brett Burke placed 1st! Ethan Pauly took 4th place in the Creed Speaking Contest. Jesse Bauer took 8th in Salesmanship. Sara Brunner and Gail Gabriel took 4th & 8th in Ag Broadcasting. Angelica Hafele took 12th in Public Speaking.
With his first place win Brett Burke will go on to compete at the National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana in the fall!

The Newell Cub Scouts will be holding their annual Pinewood Derby at City Hall on January 20th at 2pm.
New this year is a business class, local businesses are being challenged to build a car and compete against one another.
In part this is a fundraiser, to compete you will need to purchase a $25 car kit from the local scouts, you need not be present to race, but must be at City Hall for the weigh in at 2pm.

It was reported recently that our local Cub Scouts led by Jim & Tricia Anderson and Kurt Olson recently took part in the Care and Share Food Drive. Between the Newell and Nisland area the scouts were able to collect approximately 500 pounds of food. Newell’s Food Pantry was the receipent of all the generously donated items.
Way to go SCOUTS!!
On Tuesday, January 8th Dr. Thom Flamboe will be speaking at Austin Auditoriom from 2:15-3:45pm. His program “I Am Somebody” is free and the public is invited to attend.

Around the same time period that many nativity scenes in town were vandalized, the large metal Valley Irrigator newspaper dispenser that was in front of City Hall disappeared. If you have any information call the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
