Flu Shot Clinic

Flu Shots will be available on Nov. 20th from 1-4pm in the BHP&Light building. The Butte Co. Health RN Linda Hoxie will be administering the vaccine. Present your medicare/medicaid cards or $18, there is a $7 administrative charge for the childrens shot. If you have any questions call the BC Health RN at 892-2523.

Pancake Supper & Silent Auction

On Saturday, November 17th at the NVN Center from 5-7pm the Butte Co. Historical Society will be hosting a pancake, egg, and sausage supper and a silent auction. Freewill donations will be accepted, all proceeds will go to the Hillside School Historical Restoration Project.

Cleanup Continues Behind the Scenes

img041.jpgOver the past couple of weeks Horizons has continued to get phone calls to help people move out old fridges, water heaters, stoves, and other miscellaneous scrap metal. There have been lots of loads to the rubble site since the main cleanup day held on Saturday, November 3rd. Thanks to the people who have continued to volunteer equipment, time and muscles! :)

Attending City Council mtgs are one of the best ways to know what’s going on in your town, and a great way to share in the decisions that can directly affect you!

  • Newell City Council Meeting Wednesday, November 14th - 7pm at Newell City Hall located on 3rd Street. Regular meetings are held every second Wednesday of the month. Mayor- Roger Monson, Commissioners - Jim Martin, Bob Miles, Mike Wolff. Acting Finance Officer - Jennifer Parrow, City Foreman - Todd Youngberg.
  • Nisland Town Board Meeting Wednesday, November 14th - 7:30pm at Nisland Town Hall. *Comment if you know who’s on the town board in Nisland - I’ll fill it in also!

Community Thanksgiving Service

The annual NVN community Thanksgiving Service is going to be held at 6:00 p.m. this Sunday, November 18th at city hall. A full Thanksgiving meal will be served followed by singer and speaker Steve Desmond. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Armistice Day was officially changed to Veterans’ Day by an Act of Congreswall-flags.jpgs on May 24, 1954.  That iwojimamemorial.jpgyear President Eisenhower called on all American citizens to observe the day by remembering the sacrifices of all those who fought so gallantly. The President referred to the change of name to Veterans’ Day to honor all of the servicemen and women who have fought and sacrificed during all America’s wars.

Newell Food Pantry

food-pantry-027-small.jpgIf you’re ever in need, or know someone that could use a little help - the Newell Food Pantry is open on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each food-pantry-028-small.jpgmonth from 1-4pm, it’s housed in the NVN Center. They have a wide variety of canned goods, non-perishables and frozen meat (mostly antelope and venison donated by hunters and packaged by Tri-County Lockers). If you aren’t in need, but would instead like to donate - bring by your donation while it’s open, or contact Pastor Nathan Keller. He said if you need food and can’t make it during the regular hours, give him a call and he’ll let you in!

700 Tires and TONS of junk…

Nope, not a misprint - according to organizers of the latest clean up day (11/3) the City Rubble Site had to stop collecting tires mid afternoon due to the fact that they were at their allowed quota. 700 tires were collected within 4 hours!! Loads and loads of snowmobiles, motorcycles, and appliances large and small were just some of the various other items also taken to the Rubble Site.

Three local churches are participating in Operation Christmas Child this year. You can help - fill a shoebox with gift items for a girl or boy in one of the following age catagories 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Then along with $7 for shipping, drop the filled box off at the Newell Baptist Church on 11-11 from 4-6pm or 11-12 from 5-6pm. The Newell Christian Fellowship will be packaging boxes on 11-12 starting at 1pm, and the Prairie Home Church will be accepting boxes on 11-11 during church services. These boxes will be shipped to children in more than 100 countries that wouldn’t otherwise receive a gift for Christmas. During the Celebration Event on November 9th Horizons members presented the Newell Strategic Plan to the community. The five basic goals are to put up new signage, improve the attractiveness of town, creat a stronger more unified sense of community, promote local businesses while raising funds for community improvements, and to build an assisted living facility. Guest Speaker was Kari Fruechte our Horizons Project Director, many local Horizons members also spoke.

Crushing & Compacting has begun.

Martin Trucking has arrived and begun crushing and compacting all the scrap iron, white appliances and other metal items that have been brought to the City Rubble Site. You still have until 11/9 to make an appointment with the City to bring in metal items, so get cleaning! If you need help from Horizons in getting your items to the Rubble Site, contact Cheryl McCann for more info.

Rural Advocate Available in Newell

Starting on November 1st Mary Koens, a Rural Advocate with the Artemis House will be available at the Newell Public Library from 1:30-3:30pm every Thursday. Koens has many educational pamphlets, resources and is there just to visit if needed.

Donations for the Artemis Boutique in Spearfish can be dropped off with Koens when she visits Newell. Donations of clothing, toys or necessities need to be in new or good condition, the store is used to provide those in need with necessary items and is also a thrift store that’s open to the public (344 Colorado Blvd - Spearfish) the proceeds from sales goes directly to support the Artemis House.

Third time’s a charm…

Horizons met on October 29th for the third time in the Visioning Phase. The group, broke into three committees; beautification, economic development, and community events. Each group wrote down the goals, implementation steps, and timelines for each of their goals completetion. These items will be formally organized into Newell’s Strategic Plan, which will be presented to the community during the CELEBRATION EVENT (see blog post below) on November 9th! Free meal starting at 6pm, everyone is welcome.

JUNK is DUMPED!

Newell Horizons organized another successful clean up day on November 3rd. Countless loads of junk were hauled to the City Rubble Site on volunteers trailers, pick up beds, and dump trucks. Truely a community effort was seen - the Mayor, local business owners, Pastors, residents, country folks, teachers… even teenagers and children pitched in to bring Newell that much closer to a sparkly clean future. Pulling together to get things done - that’s Newell community unity at work - job well done Horizons members!

N Park Shelter update!

The shelter in the North City Park is becoming a reality! If you’ve taken a stroll on the walking path in the past few days you might have noticed the dirt work, and now poles are set! Last night Community Club showed thier support of the project by donating $200 towards nuts, bolts and other necessities needed.

VFW Transformed into Haunted House
