Message from Artemis House

May 20th, 2008 by heatherk

May is Elder Abuse Awareness Month

In 2005, 85,000 persons over the age of 65 were victims of non-fatal violent crime.  Crime victims over the age of 65 lost a total of $1.3 billion due to personal and property crimes in 2005.  Many of these crimes were committed by family members or people who were known by the victim.  What can we do to help keep our elder population and ourselves safe?

  • Report suspicious activity in our neighborhoods and businesses to the police
  • Let a friend or neighbor know when going on vacation, to the hospital and any other changes in routine.
  • Never give out banking numbers, Social Security numbers and other personal information on the phone or internet.
  • When hiring repairmen, call to check out their credentials.  Contact the company they represent, the Better Business Bureau and ask friends and neighbors if they know of the person or business.
  • Keep doors locked even in the day and even if you are home.
  • Remember to lock car doors and garage doors.
  • When in public, be aware of your surroundings.  In crowded places, keep your billfold in a front pocket.  Keep your purse close to your body.
  • Walk in daylight or well lit areas.
  • Consider keeping valuables in a safety deposit box or safe.
  • Do not carry or keep large amounts of cash.

Thanks to the hard work of a few Horizons members, Mrs. Melanie Williamson’s exploratory class and Mr. Wince’s gym class, part of the Horizons Stratgic Plan was accomplished Friday morning. Three new trees were planted next to the gym addition and one tree was replaced in front of the high school.  Three of the trees were sponsored by donors and one was bought by the Horizons group. Thanks so much all who made this happen!

Final set of questions for the blog requirements! Please add your input.

12. Sustaining action and creating structural change around community  How will your community make decisions about seeking further resources to support its plans? Is a system in place to seek, receive, monitor and report on new resources to support community work? Is a system in place to maintain contact with, or to continue to work with other communities?  With your Delivery Organization? In other partnerships? What new resources have been secured to assist the work of the community?
